What are the Characteristics of a Thriller Film?

Thriller films are often set in exotic places such as foreign cities, deserts and polar regions.
Characters in thrillers usually include criminals, stalkers, assassins, innocent victims and characters with deep pasts. 
Themes normally include-terrorism, pursuits, romantic triangles and kidnappings.
Conventions of thriller films include:
  • Low Key lighting
  • Quick cuts 
  • Shadows
  • Tension music
  • Black and white shots
Characters normally have a hidden identity that the audience will uncover as the film progresses.
Cross cutting is a key point in the editing of the thriller as it is used to build tension and suspense with is essential.
Music is very important in the film as it helps to understand the mood of the characters and hint significant parts within the film.
Mise-en-scene includes location, lighting, costumes, make-up and hair, and the acting. Theses points are all key to the final outcome of the film.

What do we expect from a Thriller?

  • A thriller aims to keep its audience alert therefore making it violent and have a lot of action.
  • to have a good story line
  • having an underdog- telling the thriller for other peoples point of view
  • a range of multiple view points 
  • pacing of the film must be high- revealing n
