Which thriller is considered to be the 'best of all time'?


It was very had to distinguish what the 'best' thriller is as it can be defined in many different ways-

  • of the most excellent or desirable type or quality
  • to the highest degree
  • that which is the most excellent, outstanding, or desirable.


After a lot of research on this and found out that Jaws was considered to be the best. It is about a giant great white shark that arrives on the shores of a New England beach resort and wreaks havoc with bloody attacks on swimmers until a part-time sheriff teams up with a marine biologist and an old seafarer to hunt the monster down.
The Director: Steven Spielberg also directed jurassic park and E.T.

Who are some of the most well known directors associated with this genre?


David Paul Cronenberg, (born March 15, 1943) is a Canadian filmmaker, screenwriter and actor. He is the director of many well known thrillers such as Crash, horrors of our minds and focuses on the psychological.



Christopher Nolan is also a very good example of a well known director of thrillers such as the dark night, inception and the prestige. His narrative structures often reflect the mental construction of characters.
This is the best scene from the film inception, I really felt on the edge of my seat when i watched this film as it does not stop being exciting.


Sir Alfred Hitchcock(the grandfather of thriller) is also a very well known director of films such as psycho and rebecca. His thriller are mostly to do with physiology. He was the one that helped shaped the modern-day thriller genre we know today.

What are the Characteristics of a Thriller Film?

Thriller films are often set in exotic places such as foreign cities, deserts and polar regions.
Characters in thrillers usually include criminals, stalkers, assassins, innocent victims and characters with deep pasts. 
Themes normally include-terrorism, pursuits, romantic triangles and kidnappings.
Conventions of thriller films include:
  • Low Key lighting
  • Quick cuts 
  • Shadows
  • Tension music
  • Black and white shots
Characters normally have a hidden identity that the audience will uncover as the film progresses.
Cross cutting is a key point in the editing of the thriller as it is used to build tension and suspense with is essential.
Music is very important in the film as it helps to understand the mood of the characters and hint significant parts within the film.
Mise-en-scene includes location, lighting, costumes, make-up and hair, and the acting. Theses points are all key to the final outcome of the film.

What do we expect from a Thriller?

  • A thriller aims to keep its audience alert therefore making it violent and have a lot of action.
  • to have a good story line
  • having an underdog- telling the thriller for other peoples point of view
  • a range of multiple view points 
  • pacing of the film must be high- revealing n

What is a Thriller?

A thriller is a novel, play, or film with an exciting plot usually involving crime or espionage (spy), with a very exciting contest or experience 
Another definition would be a genre of film that uses suspense, tension and excitement as it's main elements.
Many Thrillers use cross genres to make the film attract to a wider audience.

  • Horror Thrillers such as Final Destination and The Cabin in the Woods- seeking to elicit a negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's primal fears
  • Psychological Thrillers such as The Silence of the Lambs and Black Swan-is a fictional thriller story which emphasises the psychology of its characters and their unstable emotional states
  • Crime Thrillers such as Batman- theses are thrillers that have a focus point of breaking the law, which normally include villains 
  • Romantic Thrillers such as Vertigo- narratives that's includes both romance and thriller
  • Supernatural Thrillers such as Paranormal Activity- involves supernatural behaviour within one or more characters 
  • Action Thrillers such as Seven- containing scenes of violence throughout the film
